Nervous For an Interview Read this - Walrath Recruiting, Inc. If you get nervous before going into a job interview, donât worry- youâre not alone. Itâs easy to think that this job interview (and the opportunity it represents) is the be-all-end-all of your career. However, this mindset will just lead to unnecessary worrying, and wonât help your performance. In todayâs blog, weâll give some tips on how you can calm your nerves, and go into your next job interview with confidence. Remember, You Have an Interview for a Reason When you are coming up on an interview, itâs easy for the negative feelings to start rolling in. What if they donât think Iâm a good fit? Am I qualified? What if I say the wrong thing? But donât. If itâs not meant to be, thatâs ok! But if theyâve called you in for an interview, you should have a renewed sense of confidence simply from being there. Itâs Simply a Conversation Going off the first point, itâs common for you to be nervous that you may say the wrong thing. However, this is where people miss the point of an interview. All you are doing is sitting down with someone else to have a conversation. Dont make the hiring manager or the interviewer someone you should fear. Instead, think of them as a potential future friend/colleague. The friendlier and more natural the conversation seems, the better! Likeability and honesty are powerful factors in getting hired. Practice Answering Questions out Loud If you fear you may say the wrong thing practice. It will help you get a sense for a calm and natural response in a non-stressful environment. One of the biggest problems people have is that they rush through their answers because they are nervous and donât exactly know what to say. Of course, you wonât know everything that will be discussed, but if youâve taken the time to prepare, it removes the stress. Make Sure You Have Everything One of the biggest causes of nervousness is a lack of preparedness. If youre not sure what exactly you should be bringing, search the company website beforehand, or do a simple Google search on what to bring to an interview. Having everything you need reduces last minute stress. Give Yourself Time Relating to the previous point, tardiness is the second biggest cause of nervousness regarding interviews. Make sure that you give yourself enough time to arrive â" early. You want to show up relatively 15 minutes before your interview time. But allow yourself time for parking, locating the building, locating the office, etc. Itâs better to be 30 minutes early and sit in your car until the 15-minute mark, then to be racing the clock getting there on time. If youâre relaxed and prepared beforehand, those emotions will carry into your interview. Exercise Stick with us for a second. Yes, this might require more effort, but you canât fight the natural energy and endorphins that you get from a good sweat sesh. Not to mention it is a natural stress reducer, which may be exactly what you need beforehand. Get your heart rate up for 15-30 minutes in the morning. Youâll be surprised how it makes you feel. Power Pose Your Stress Out This one is more beneficially than you think. Studies have PROVEN that a power pose ACTUALLY triggers emotions in your brain to make you feel more confident. Trust us. Try it. Get Good Sleep Sleep. Oh, what an EXTREMELY underrated piece of the puzzle. Even if you have the night before jitters, try to get to bed earlier than usual. Feeling well rested in the morning gives you a different sense of energy. The more energy you have the more excited, charismatic and confident you feel. If nothing more, try to get at least eight hours of sleep the night before. Breathe The effects of a deep breath. It can reduce stress and anxiety, and actually calm your nerves. Want to read more on why it does this? Check it out. Then try it out. Just be Yourself Just. Be. yourself. That is the person they were interested in interviewing! A lot of candidates believe there is a certain expectation for the type of person a company is looking for. But what they really want is honesty and natural connection. If you are not a great fit, itâs nothing personal. It just simply means it wasnât a great fit. But if you get the job offer and were 100% yourself, youâll feel SUPER confident accepting the job knowing everything was out on the table. There Are Other Jobs At the end of the day, there are other jobs in the sea. More opportunities will come along, even if it doesnt seem like it now. Although you may feel really attached to and excited about one job, dont get too torn up if it doesnt work out. Simply take note of anything you may want to do differently in the future, and resolve to fix them in the next job interview you go to. Was this helpful? Share with a friend who you think might need the pep-talk.
